Plastic Recycling
We met Plastic Wood Studio (塑人木工場) on IG, they’re one of the few people we know locally who tried to recycle plastic by following Precious Plastics guidelines. We knew about Precious Plastics when their first hippy online video went viral a few years back, but unfortunately our studio didn’t have the space nor expertise to join the force of tackling the growing plastic waste issue.
After talking to the founder(s) at Plastic Wood Studio online, we met up in person and visited each other’s studio. They generously offered us a few of their plastic sheets that are upcycled from mostly plastic bottle caps. We tried to laser cut/engrave one of the sheets with somewhat unsatisfactory result, will try other experiments on the material later.
It’s nice to meet and collaborate with similar minded people to tackle the immense global plastic waste issue that can use everyone’s effort, big or small. Our studio will definitely chip in our part later. Since experimenting with 3D printing soon after we started 723 Studio in 2014, we have saved most of the plastic off-prints (mainly PLA and PETG) and have always been looking for ways to recycle them. We have invested in an extruding machine that will hopefully help us recycle the off-prints into new 3D printing filaments. We will be conducting some experiments in Q1/Q2 of 2022, please stay tuned for the test results.
